Thanks a lot, Davyd, that was really helpful :-/ I didn't know the meaning of "Sarabande" before.

I guess I'm able to find the right CD now :)

You're welcome Etukka. :) The "Barry Lyndon" sountrack album has long been a favorite of mine.

For anyone who likes violin music, I would strongly recommend "The Butterfly Lovers" violin concerto by Chen Gang and He Zhan-Hao. It is probably the one best musical discovery that I made one year, and it is piece WELL worth borrowing from a library or buying.

The style is somewhat similar to Chinese opera, the notes say...perhaps that was part of what attracted me...

One more thing, I suggest that you listen to the Naxos recording, rather than the one with Vanessa Mae. :-/

I recently found a very interesting album called "O'Stravaganza". It's a mixture from Vivaldi's music and traditional Irish music. It sounds really beautiful and I can't stop listening to it :D. It's just amazing how well such a style-mix works.

I've just discovered Richard Strauss. He's no family of the famous Austrian Strauss family who composed the famous Vienna Waltzes like "An der Schönen Blauen Donau".

His music is very Wagner-like, however, besides a few opera's, Strauss has also written a lot of Symphonic poems. One of his most famous pieces is "Also sprach Zarathustra", which is the opening theme of the famous Kubrick movie "2001: A Space Odyssey".

Personally this composition is not really one of my favourites - I don't think it's really representative for his other works.

At the moment I'm renting a CD in the library with his symphonic poem "Eine Alpensinfonie op.64" (Symphony of the Alps), preformed by the Berliner Philharmoniker by the famous director Herbert von Karajan.
I'm totally in love with Strauss' music!

I've got to know strauss thanks to an online classical radio station (can't remember which), which played another wonderful symphonic poem of him: "Aus Italien op.16" (From Italy). but unfortunatly I haven't found a CD of that in our library.

I recently saw a 9-CD box set with his most important works on it, and I hope Santa Claus will keep that in mind when he visits my home at Christmas ???

At the moment I'm also looking for DVD's with performances of his opera's (Salome, Elektra, Die Frau Ohne Schatten, Der Rosenkavalier, Ariadne Auf Naxos, ...), but I haven't found rental versions yet. I first want to see one of these opera's before I buy an expensive DVD.
What I shame I didn't find out about him earlier, as last year the Vlaamse Opera (THe Flemish Opera) performed his "Ariadne of Naxos". A pity...

edited to ad:
Strauss lived from 1864 to 1949. His music is classified in the category "Romanticism" (like eg Richard Wagner), and a few pieces are classified as "Expressionistic" (like eg Sergei Prokofiev)

R. Strauss' best known tone poem is probably "Till Eulenspiegel's merry pranks". It seems to pop up on the radio here about once a week. ::)

"Don Juan" has one of the most dramatic endings in all such descriptive music.

Strauss was one of the few composers who was able to conduct recordings of many of his pieces, though the technology of the time doesn't do his complex works justice.

I could recommend Schubert for those interested in melodic classical music.

I recently heard Karl Jenkins work:

The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, and was overwhelmed by the emotional power of it.

I now intend to seek out more of his CDs. :)

My favorite piano piece would have to be moonlight sonata first movement. Here's a great guitar of version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kS8eVFq1ZdU . I also enjoy the several variations on this theme, the latest used in BSG (Battlestar sonatica).

Of the strings, I like Vivaldi four seasons specifically Autumn and spring. There are quite a few foreign string pieces I like. But I don't quite remember all the names. But one on the top of my mind is this Asian piece: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Egmjy8BbME&feature=related . The solo violin performance is fantastic here
