Charlton Heston « Thread Started on Apr 6, 2008, 3:52pm »
Charlton Heston, the Oscar winner who portrayed Moses,Ben-Hur and other heroic figures on film in the ’50s and ’60s and later championed conservative values as head of the National Rifle Association, has died Saturday night at his home in Beverly Hills with his wife Lydia at his side, family spokesman Bill Powers said. He declined to comment on the cause of death or provide further details. He was 84,and happens to be my alltime fav actor...
It's a sad day to me and many more persons who saw his films along the past 50 years, but he won't ever be forgotten. From the whole cast of Ben-Hur only Haya Harareet (Esther) is alive. God bless you,Prince of Hur.

I just heard about his death a couple of hours ago. I watched Ben Hur a few weeks ago and thought how great his performance was. Although it was a epic movie, his performance was so human. I'll miss Heston. He was a great actor.
Yes, he was a fine actor, no doubt. But his political views were too extreme for my taste. I still remember the interview with him in "Bowling for Columbine".
TCM ran an interview the other day that Robert Osborn did with Heston a few years ago. It was good. Heston was very entertaining and very enlightening about the movies he had made . Commenting on learning to drive chariots for Ben Hur ... he had been training by himself and not with other chariots, and worried about whether he could put his training to use in the crowded race scene. The director told him, "Chuck, I guarantee you.. you're going to win the race."
I also liked his comments about working with Egar G. Robinson in Soylent Green, and on making Planet of the Apes.
I watched Soylent Green a couple of months ago and came away with the disturbing feeling that we're closer to that than we should be.
If you look at Heston's movies, he's done a wide variety of roles. Not many actors are willing to do that kind of reach -- from epic hero (Ben Hur) to downtrodden cowboy (Will Penny). A fine actor, greatly missed.
I admit I do not subscribe some of his statements concerning weapons and so on,but I don't remember a film featuring himself that I may eventualy dislike.
My dad once came to know him personally through a common friend in late '84 if I recall exactly.
